An encounter with my sign...

So, I'm not really into zodiac signs, astrology, horoscopes and all that... but my encounter with this yesterday got me thinking...

I'm a scorpio.

Symbol: The Scorpion

Stone: Topaz

Life Pursuit: To survive against all opposition

Vibration: Resilient

Scorpio's Secret Desire: To triumph

I've lived in AZ for 7 years and it wasn't until a few weeks ago that I spotted my first scorpion here in the valley of the sun. A friend took me scorpion hunting in his backyard. Basically I let him do the searching and the killing...I watched from a distance. Kinda creepy...but not so bad. NEVER have I seen one in my home though. Last night I spotted one on Ashley's (my roommates) wall in her bedroom. We may have freaked out. I stood watch as Ashley went in search of a weapon--a platform shoe. I offered to kill it, I thought Ashley might just die. However, Ash found her inner Aries, whose life pursuit is the thrill of the moment and secret desire is to lead the way for others, and smashed the dang sucker herself! Thanks for saving the day, Ashley!!! Now we're just worried our little non-friend may have friends lurking in our home...YIKES!

PS--My horoscope from yesterday, the day of the encounter:

Scorpio
New tastes and experiences are easy to come upon and, once tried, may stick with you for a longtime. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but don't settle for just wishing and whining. The environment is volatile but not threatening today, so try to take a step back and not get caught up in others dramas.
Hmmm. What's your sign?

A St. Patrick's Day Miracle

I love St. Patrick's Day... which I know seems odd to most, because I don't drink. So, I thought I'd list a few reasons as to why I love today:
1. Bagpipes - love the sound of them. Just love 'em.
2. Celtic Music, kinda goes with number 1.
3. Love Irish step dancing. Went to see Riverdance several years ago....AMAZING! Loved it. Wish I could be an Irish step dancer. Don't worry, I did start out my day with a little Irish jig.
4. Green. Great color.
5. Little green men.
7. A reason to celebrate for no good reason... I thought about adding a small history lesson to this post about how St. Patrick's Day all started... but then I decided I didn't care. Which is basically my point. Today is a day to celebrate and have fun for reasons most of us don't even really know, or care to know. So, time to party!
8. Only day of the year it's acceptable to pinch people.
9. In general I have a curious attraction to Ireland. I'd love to visit there someday. I will...I just haven't planned that trip yet. Australia is in the works...Ireland will be next.
10. Over the years people seem to recall that it is one of my favorite holidays. For that reason alone many friends and family have called or sent texts to wish me a fabulous St. Patrick's Day. It's like a second birthday.

The day is not over...but I'll go ahead and share the beginnings of my holiday...
It started in Texas with me playing Wii till all hours of the night. (Work has officially thrown off my sleeping schedule.) After I slept a bit I woke up. Started my day off right with an Irish jig and ate green breakfast cooked by my sister Amy. She did a fabulous job of adding a little green as you can see...
The green eggs look kinda gross...but tasted fabulous.
My huge shamrock pancake. I couldn't eat it. I'd already had so many small ones...and I had to run off to the airport. Thats all for now. We'll see what the day brings me. St. Patrick's Day post part II, still to come....

P.S. This relates to my first post on my blog ever. The "P" problem post. I just have to share. On planes, I usually sit by the window so that I can lean against the wall and sleep. However, I decided to switch things up a bit and sit in the aisle so that I wouldn't have to ask everyone to get up whenever I had to go pee. I hate doing that. Turns out...I could have stuck with the window seat and been fine. You see, I went this morning when I woke up, and then didn't go again until I got to Phoenix. Amazing. I went 7 hours today without going to the bathroom. I think my bladder has grown...or I was just really dehydrated. Sorry if you feel like this was too much info about me...but anyone who knows me, knows this truly is a St. Patrick's Day miracle!

an unwelcome visitor....

...not to be confused with an intruder...because i've experienced that as well. that was many years ago. our unwelcome visitor came on friday...

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door-
Only this, and nothing more.'

first, let me give some back ground info.

wednesday afternoon
i'm out to lunch with my bff brittany and i get a text from my housemate lizzie that says "there is a bird stuck in our chimney and it's kinda freaking me out." i laugh a little, and by the time i'm home and see lizzie next, i've forgotten about it.

thursday afternoon
i'm watching a little tv while i eat lunch. i'm sitting on the couch and hear some odd noises coming from our chimney. i turn off the tv. i now know what lizzie is talking about. the sounds were freaking me out a little too...but no big deal. my thoughts include: hopefully the bird or whatever is stuck in there will find its way out, i hope the thing doesn't die in there and stink up our house, and will that thing shut up....i'm trying to watch a re-run of the office and drift off to sleep, i need a nap.

now we get to friday. i'm in my room and sleeping most of the day in preparation for work that night.

friday 525pm
my alarm goes off. time to get up for work. snooze.

friday 530pm
my alarm goes off. time to get up for work. snooze.

friday 535pm
my alarm goes off. time to get up for work. snooze. you get the picture. this continues for a bit.

friday 548pm
not time for the alarm. no, its a text from my housemate jennifer. it reads, "there is/was a big black bird in our kitchen so i left a trail of crackers on the floor and the back door open."

excuse me!!! now i'm out of bed. open my bedroom door, yell out jennifer's name. silence. what?!? she's gone?! i had heard her, and what i assumed were her visiting teachers (it being the 2nd to last day of the month and all) here a little after 5pm and heard her milling about the house until moments before i awoke to her text.

um, by the way there is a big ol' nasty black bird in our house, i left some crackers, peace out, good luck with the bird. awesome. not only did i choose to sleep in, but now i have to deal with this.

so yeah, jennifer has fled the scene...or the bird got to her before i could...

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering,
fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, `Lenore!
'This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, `Lenore!
'Merely this and nothing more.

friday 550pm
i cautiously make my way to the front room/kitchen, fearing that any moment some bird is going to attack me. i see the crackers. see the back door open. i don't see a bird. i'm getting ready to shut the back door, thinking, ahhh good the cracker trick must have worked...and then i look up and see it, the predator starring me down with its wee beady eyes... ewwwww!!!! jennifer was right. there indeed, was a big black bird in our kitchen perched right on the front of our kitchen sink. although i was quite disgusted by it, and really needed to hurry and get to work...i still found it important to grab my camera.

it may not look that scary in the picture, but in real life...well, i guess it wasn't scary then either...just gross. ewww...so gross. there was a bird in my house and it pooped in our kitchen sink. nasty. as i neared the bird, it tried to escape through the closed window behind it. i laughed. poor bird...(or let's call him hector, as lizzie suggested we name him)...couldn't get through the glass. it think it was pretty terrified of me. so, i went outside and tapped on the glass...hector went balistic! flew all over the place and landed on the family room fan.

`Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting-
`Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken! - quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!'

it's now nearing 600pm. i really had to get ready for work. so i quickly take a shower, get dressed for work...come back to the living room and there is hector still sittin' on the fan. i wish i had thought to turn the fan on, instead, i just hit one of the blades with a magazine to get the fan to move. boy, i thought the bird when crazy the first time...hector was all over the place. flew right at me for a second. it all happened so fast, i couldn't even find him when it quieted down. turns out the bird so, turns out hector was lurking in the corner shadows of our front room... long story short (i know, nothing is short with me...i always have to include all the details...) i cornered the bird, created a barrier so that it would stay along the wall til it got to our open front door. it was then that hector finally spotted freedom, and we parted ways. fly away black bird, fly away...

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted -...

627pm friday
out the door for work. should have left at 0615pm. clocked in right at 0700pm. my hair was in a wet bun and i had no make-up on, but who really cares, my patients are generally old and confused and my house was hector-free...
...Nevermore

ps. the crackers used to unsuccessfully lure hector out of our house were Keebler Flipside pretzel crackers. um, kind of de-lish! if you haven't tried them, i highly recommend this unconventional snack. a twist on two great familiar tastes.

The Best Kept Secret

So after Christmas, my mom and I ran to the store to make a few returns and exchanges. As I was searching for a coat, I came across something peculiar: Note the sticker on pants...here is a close up. (Sorry it's blurry...my camera battery died after the photo op and I couldn't get a better one.)

Hmmm... Really, need I say more.

PS: I started to blog this earlier but then had to pause and go for a run... As to avoid ever having to tell myself that I could wear pants that size and still look slim.

I've been a blogging slacker!

It's true. You may have noticed the lack of posts in the last 6 weeks. I have no excuse. Well...I could list many, but when it comes down to it, I've just been a slacker. I have not died. I have not dropped off the face of the earth. I have not gone into some sort of hibernation...although, that sounds kind of nice.... Anyway, I'm alive and doing well. I've had several events, thoughts, opportunities to blog...and I have not.

So, I'll be working on getting a few new posts up in the near future.

Until then, here is a little taste of the no-good business I've been up to... It was my birthday, and it's Martinelli's Sparkling Cider--I swear.

And I spilled it everywhere...twice. I actually have a video of it too...maybe that will come in a near future post.

PS: I'm currently listening to a Bangles CD. Anyone else a secret Bangles fan?

She Likes It! Hey, Jilly!

The other day, I was browsing the cereal aisle at my local grocery. I'm always looking for a deal on cereal I love. Well, I came across LIFE cereal...but not the original...and not cinnamon... What was this new flavor?! Maple and Brown Sugar. I like maple and brown sugar. And I like LIFE. And it said, right on the box that it was not only NEW, but DELICIOUS as well.

Hmmm... it took me only a quick moment to decide that I needed to try it. (Yes, its true. I made a quick decision. Hard to believe, I know.)

It is delicious. It is a new flavor. And I love it. All last week I was excited to get home from work in the morning, just to have a bowl of my new Maple & Brown Sugar Life Cereal. (Of course, I'm always glad to leave work in the morning...but thats beside the point.)

I love cereal. It's true. I eat it (almost) every morning. And, I love life. It's true. I live it every day. So why not combine the two.

Life cereal has come out with several different flavors that haven't lasted including: Raisin Life, Honey Graham Life, Life Vanilla Yogurt Crunch, Life Chocolate Oat Crunch, Multigrain Life, and Baked Apple Life. Let's hope Maple and Brown Sugar is here to stay...at least for a little while!

PS: Did you know that the "Hey Mikey" ad campaign for Life Cereal ran from 1972 to 1984, becoming one of the longest running and popular commercials of all time.
